CCEE · Secondary School Redesign

About & Governance

Every young person deserves to be seen, valued, and supported.

We believe belonging, purpose, and opportunity should be guaranteed by design, not left to chance.

Why we exist

Our shared belief

“We believe every young person deserves to be seen, valued, and supported, and we refuse to accept a system where too many are not. Grounded in our own stories and driven by the students in front of us, we are redesigning schools so that belonging, purpose, and opportunity are guaranteed by design, not left to chance.”

Written together by the network at its first gathering.

  • Our vision

California’s middle and high schools ensure that every learner is known, engaged, supported, and prepared to thrive in a rapidly changing world, through deeper, more equitable learning and sustainable school redesign.

  • Our mission

Accelerate the redesign of California’s secondary schools by identifying, supporting, documenting, and scaling effective models, through networks of schools, demonstration sites, shared learning, research, and practice-informed policy.

The pilot

The Secondary School Redesign Pilot Program

This is not a new initiative. For more than two decades, communities across California have led, experimented, and learned in secondary school redesign. The pilot and the newly signed $50 million expansion give the work momentum.

How the network is led

California Secondary School Redesign is led by CCEE in partnership with Learner-Centered Collaborative. CCEE administers the pilot for the state. LCC, a national nonprofit, was selected as CCEE’s lead partner for the second phase. Its Co-CEO, Devin Vodicka, leads that work in collaboration with CCEE. Leaders from each of the 14 networks meet monthly as the Network Leads Guiding Coalition to shape priorities, test ideas and set the network’s learning agenda. A statewide Advisory Committee brings together educators, administrators, school boards, families, researchers, learners and philanthropy. Its members advise on strategy and carry the work into their own organizations.
