The Network
Learning from one another across California
California Secondary School Redesign is a network of networks: schools, districts, and partners reimagining what middle and high school can be, and sharing what works so it can spread.
The idea
A network of networks
Fourteen networks of schools and districts, spanning regions, communities, and school models, work toward the same goal. There is no single blueprint: each brings its own context and strengths, and they learn from and with one another.
- 14networks
- ~70districts
- 100+school sites
- 8cross-network working groups
The good thinking in one network shouldn’t stay there. One network opens its doors, others walk through them, and the practice travels.
Strategic priorities
What the network is working toward
Deepen school redesign
Supporting networks and demonstration sites as they design, refine, and sustain models built on small learning communities, advisory, deeper learning, and authentic assessment.
Build a statewide learning community
Connecting educators, districts, students, families, and partners through shared learning, shared resources, and promising practice.
Learn from practice to inform policy
Documenting successes, barriers, and lessons learned so state policy and system conditions can support redesign across California.
Scale and sustain what works
Building statewide capacity and partnerships so more young people can experience redesigned schools, well beyond the pilot.
The networks
Meet the 14 networks
Each network has a two-page snapshot of who they are, the students and communities they serve, and the redesign work they’re leading. Browse them to find ideas that fit your own context.
Coming soon: an interactive map of where the networks work across California, and a guide to demonstration sites, schools that open their doors so others can see redesign in practice.

How it works
How the network learns together
Convenings
Three times a year, teams from across all 14 networks come together to work through real challenges with colleagues from across the network.
Peer consultancies
Teams bring their toughest redesign questions and get fresh perspectives from schools facing similar work.
Site visits
Networks open their schools to one another, from portfolio defenses to student internships out in the community.
Common Ground
The network’s newsletter shares bright spots (promising practices and moments worth celebrating), learning opportunities, and research, so lessons from one community reach many.
Shared work
Working groups
Cross-network working groups are sustained spaces to learn together around the practices most central to redesign. Each is led by its members, with CCEE there to support, and a Cross-Cutting Leads group connects what surfaces across them so insights don’t stay siloed.
Crediting authentic demonstrations of learning
What it takes for students to earn credit for meaningful learning, wherever it happens.
Rethinking high school curriculum, A-G, and interdisciplinary learning
Designing pathways for deeper, integrated learning, alongside UC, CSU, and A-G stakeholders.
Structures for belonging, collaboration, and deeper learning
The structures and practices that help every student and adult belong, and how to know they’re working.
Adult learning, staffing, and leadership
Giving educators the time, roles, and support that redesign requires.
District and system conditions for scale and sustainability
How central offices change policy and practice to enable redesign.
Change management
How change is led well, so redesign takes hold and lasts.
Communications and storytelling
Turning what’s happening in schools into stories and evidence that resonate with policymakers.
Indigenous self-determination and sovereignty
How networks can partner with tribes and Indigenous peoples in ways that honor their sovereignty and self-determination.
Coming up
Throughout the year, the networks come together to learn from one another, work through common challenges, and see redesign in practice. More details are coming as planning continues.
